Kadence are a musical collaboration of different styles. Difficult to define by any single current genre. One part Nathan Berger and the other, Sam Reeve, Kadence was originally formed in August 2003 by their chance meeting through a mutual friend. Nathan came from an Indie music background (playing guitar, singing and writing) and Sam came from the opposite end of the musical spectrum – Dance – where he had been writing and producing tracks of different dance genres for the past 6 years. In the beginning, the idea was just to write a few tracks using both of their very different musical styles for fun more than anything else. There were no real plans and it was very experimental. What came out of those first few ‘jam sessions’ in Sam’s studio were the first couple of tracks which inspired the next 2 years of solid writing in the studio. The style steadily developed. It was never based on anything else from the start as there was nothing else similar they had come across. This allowed their style to develop freely, without constraints or preconceptions. All the tracks were written, played, sung and produced in Sam’s studio. The instrumentation and vocals were all performed by Nathan, and Sam was responsible for all of the arranging and producing. The writing is all done using the same formula that seems to have given them their unique sound from the very beginning. The plan from fairly early on was to put together a live show to take on the road. To be able to play their style completely live in club venues and to be there from the start of what they both saw as an emerging scene. Electronic dance music meets live guitar based music. They started assembling the band mid 2005 and almost a year later and a lot of practicing, they had managed to adapt their tracks for the stage. In September of 2004, Nathan and Sam began the search for musicians to form a live act that would bring their studio tracks to life. They knew that this was not going to be an easy process and it was to be a year of spreading the word and watching plenty of talented musicians before Kadence – as it is now – rehearsed together for the first time. One damp October evening in 2005, the band came together for the 1st time in an old warehouse in Lincoln. It really felt like the beginning of something. The cold, dimly lit space created an ideal setting for the band to work from. From the start, it was very intense, practicing between 2 and 4 times a week for 4-6 hours at a time. Everyone had full time day jobs to attend so it was a bit of a logistical nightmare to begin with. As the weeks went by, a style started to take shape as the various musical backgrounds began to work together to create something which sounded fresh and new. It was very difficult at first to translate the studio tracks into something that could be played by 7 live musicians without loosing too much of their dance appeal. The music pulled heavily in the direction of rock and they had to keep re-assessing the direction they were taking and adding acid lines and various other electronic ‘ingredients’ to counter balance the sound. The first gig was booked at the Cell nightclub in Lincoln for March 2006 and as the date drew close, finally, the music began to take form. Months of rehearsing together had produced a style that was live and rocky yet kept a great deal of the original dance element. They were now all comfortable with this new style and each others playing and the tracks started to flow much more easily. Kadence now have a fully rehearsed live show which sounds like nothing else. They are on the crest of what we all believe to be the next big musical genre. The music can be comfortably played in front of festival goers in a rock environment and more so in a club environment where the crowd reaction to date has been immense.
